Abstract

Phosphogypsum is a by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry that contains mainly calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO₄·2H₂O). Its abundant availability in Indonesia has not been optimally utilized and may potentially cause environmental problems. One effort to increase the added value of phosphogypsum is to process it into Anhydrous Insoluble Calcium Sulfate (CaSO₄ anhydrite II) through a calcination process. This product has high thermal stability, low water solubility, and is widely used as a filler in the paint, ceramic, construction material, and other industrial sectors. In line with the increasing demand for Anhydrous Calcium Sulfate in Indonesia, a plant producing Anhydrous Insoluble Calcium Sulfate is planned with a production capacity of 80,000 tons per year. The plant is planned to be located in Jenu District, Tuban Regency, East Java. The plant will operate continuously for 330 days per year. The main raw materials used are phosphogypsum and sulfuric acid. The production process begins with size reduction of phosphogypsum using a ball mill, followed by reaction with 5% sulfuric acid in a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) at atmospheric pressure to remove impurities such as phosphate compounds, fluoride, and calcium oxide. The resulting slurry is separated using a vacuum filter and subsequently dried in a rotary dryer. The dried solid is then calcined in a rotary kiln at 600°C and 1 atm to achieve complete dehydration and produce Anhydrous Insoluble Calcium Sulfate. The calcined product is subsequently cooled using a cooler, further ground using a ball mill, and classified using a classifier to obtain the required particle size. The fraction that does not meet the particle size specification is recycled to the ball mill, while the qualified product is stored in a storage tank as the final product.
