Abstract
Isobutene is a hydrocarbon widely utilized in industrial production processes as a reactant for manufacturing methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)—an octane-boosting additive—as well as butyl rubbers and methyl methacrylate (MMA). Indonesia currently relies heavily on imports to meet its isobutene supply needs, with no domestic producers present in the open market; this situation presents a strategic opportunity to establish an isobutene plant in the country. The plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2030 with an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons, located in the JIIPE Industrial Estate, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java. Plant operations are designed to run continuously for 330 days per year, requiring a total workforce of 190 personnel. Isobutene production is achieved through the dehydration of isobutanol using a solid alumina catalyst. The isobutanol feedstock (99.5% purity) is diluted with water to 84% in a mixing tank before being fed to a vaporizer, where it undergoes a phase change into vapor at 110°C and 1.3 atm. The isobutanol vapor is subsequently heated to 340°C prior to entering a multitube fixed-bed reactor. The dehydration reaction within the reactor is endothermic, operating at 340°C and 1.2 atm, achieving an isobutanol conversion of 99.47% and an isobutene selectivity of 96.52%. The reactor effluent is cooled using a waste heat boiler and partially condensed, then directed to a separator to split the mixture into a vapor phase (isobutene-rich) and a liquid phase (water and unreacted isobutanol). The vapor product is then compressed and fed into an absorber operating at 52°C and 5.2 atm, utilizing tert-butanol (TBA) as a solvent to absorb the isobutene. The bottoms stream from the absorber is heated and fed to a distillation tower to separate isobutene from the TBA solvent and water at a pressure of 3.3 atm and a temperature of 65°C. The final isobutene product, obtained from the distillation overheads, is condensed and stored in a storage tank at 35°C and 4.5 atm with a purity of 96.5% prior to marketing.
