Abstract
This study aims to synthesize a cellulose-based bioadsorbent derived from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) through microwave-assisted activation for crystal violet dye adsorption applications. OPEFB was selected due to its high lignocellulosic content and its underutilized potential, making it a promising raw material for environmentally friendly and economically valuable activated carbon. The research procedure included delignification using 12% NaOH solution, carbonization at 500°C for 2 hours, and microwave activation with varying power levels (400–800 W) and activation times (4–16 minutes). The produced activated carbon was characterized through moisture content, ash content, crystal violet adsorption efficiency using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and surface morphology analysis using SEM. The results showed that delignification increased cellulose content from 37.12% to 40.53% while reducing lignin content from 23.41% to 2.55%, thereby improving the suitability of OPEFB as a bioadsorbent precursor. Increasing microwave power and activation time reduced moisture content to a minimum of 4.56%, whereas ash content increased due to the formation of mineral residues during heating. All samples met the quality standards of SNI 06-3730-1995. Crystal violet adsorption efficiency improved with increasing microwave power and reached an optimum condition at 600 W for 10 minutes; however, excessive power led to a decline in adsorption performance, likely due to structural damage of the carbon pores. These findings indicate that microwave activation parameters significantly influence the characteristics and adsorption performance of the resulting bioadsorbent.
