Abstract
An aluminum sulfate plant with a production capacity of 60,000 tons/year is planned to use the Giulini process and will be located in Manyar, Gresik, East Java. The plant is designed to operate 24 hours per day and 330 days per year, using aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)₃) and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) as the main raw materials. The aluminum sulfate production process consists of several stages, including raw material preparation, reaction, evaporation, crystallization, drying, and product handling. In the raw material preparation stage, aluminum hydroxide and sulfuric acid are prepared according to the required operating conditions before being fed into the reactor. Subsequently, in the reaction stage, aluminum hydroxide is reacted with sulfuric acid solution in a reactor with a conversion of 99.92% to produce an aluminum sulfate solution. The solution is then fed into an evaporator to reduce its water content through evaporation. The concentrated aluminum sulfate solution subsequently undergoes crystallization to form aluminum sulfate crystals. The resulting crystals are then dried using a rotary dryer with the aid of hot and dry air until a product with a moisture content of 0.2% is obtained. The dried product then enters the product handling stage, which includes grinding, cooling, screening, and packaging processes before the product is ready for distribution. Based on the economic analysis, the plant is estimated to require a construction period of 2 years with a total capital investment of IDR 501,397,194,466, consisting of equity capital of IDR 300,838,318,480 and loan capital of IDR 200,558,878,987. The analysis indicates that the estimated payback period is 4 years and 7 months, with a rate of return of 12.62%. The plant is estimated to reach the Break-Even Point (BEP) at a production level of 30.03% of the maximum production capacity.
