Abstract

Silicon carbide is an inorganic compound with widespread industrial applications, including use as furnace lining material, refractory bricks, kiln components, and abrasives for manufacturing sharpening stones, grinding balls, sandpaper, and grinding wheels; it is also utilized in measuring instruments, power electronics, and industrial control devices. Domestic demand for silicon carbide is rising alongside the growth of these industrial sectors, yet the country still relies on imports to meet this need. Consequently, establishing a silicon carbide plant in Indonesia presents a promising opportunity. The proposed plant will utilize silica sand and petroleum coke as raw materials, employing the Acheson process. This process was selected due to its relatively simple and efficient operating conditions and its ability to yield a high-purity product. Following the reaction, the product undergoes a mixing stage in a ribbon mixer, followed by melting in an electric furnace. The resulting silicon carbide is then fed into a cone reactor where sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is added to remove oxidation compounds. Subsequently, the product is washed using a rotary drum vacuum filter to eliminate impurities and residual acids, then dried in an indirectly heated rotary dryer. The final product is stored in a silo (serving as a temporary holding vessel) and packaged prior to distribution. The plant is designed for continuous operation with an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons. It is planned for the Tuban Industrial Estate (KIT) in Jenu District, Tuban Regency, East Java, a location selected based on the availability of raw materials, utilities, transportation infrastructure, and an adequate workforce. The plant is scheduled to operate 330 days per year with a workforce of 153 employees. Based on the technical and economic analyses conducted, the establishment of this silicon carbide plant is deemed feasible and suitable for progression to the next design stage.
