Abstract

The Field Work Practice (PKL) was conducted at PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara, Ngadiredjo Sugar Factory, Kediri, with the objective of studying and analyzing the industrial-scale sugar manufacturing process, supporting utility systems, and quality control practices implemented to ensure the continuity and efficiency of production. The methods employed included direct observation of the production process, interviews with relevant plant personnel, and the collection and analysis of operational data from each processing unit. The main stages of sugar production consist of raw material preparation, cane milling, juice purification, evaporation, crystallization, centrifugation, drying, cooling, and packaging. Prepared sugarcane is milled to extract the juice, which subsequently undergoes a purification process to remove non-sugar impurities while minimizing sucrose losses. The purified juice is then concentrated using a multiple-effect evaporator system until it reaches a concentration of approximately 60–64 °Brix before undergoing crystallization in a vacuum pan. The resulting sugar crystals are separated from the mother liquor through centrifugation, followed by drying using hot air to reduce the moisture content, cooling, and packaging as SHS (Superium Hoofd Suiker) sugar. Ngadiredjo Sugar Factory has a processing capacity of approximately 6,000 tons of cane per day (TCD), with the main by-products consisting of bagasse, molasses, and filter cake (blotong). The production process is supported by utility systems, including steam generation and distribution, water treatment, electricity generation, and cooling water supply. In addition, quality control is carried out through laboratory analyses at various stages of the production process to ensure that the characteristics of intermediate materials, products, and final products comply with established specifications. Based on the field observations, PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara, Ngadiredjo Sugar Factory, has implemented an integrated production system that combines process units, utility systems, and quality control measures to support effective and efficient plant operations while producing sugar that meets the required quality standards.
