Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of hijrah and its impact on changing communication styles among Generation Z youth in Surabaya. It specifically focuses on the dynamics of verbal and lexical language transformation as well as daily interaction patterns post-hijrah. The significance of this research lies in revealing how newly adopted religious values are negotiated with the local identity of Surabaya, which possesses an egalitarian, direct, and blunt communication culture. The research objective is to describe the shift in communication styles and social adaptation strategies of young people in Surabaya following hijrah. This study utilizes Liliweri and Waters' Communication Style Theory alongside Henri Tajfel's Social Identity Theory as its analytical framework. A descriptive qualitative method was employed using Miles and Huberman's interactive data analysis. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving three university student informants in Surabaya. Findings indicate the elimination of profane diction, substitution with Arabic-Islamic vocabulary, enhanced self-monitoring, and a shift from aggressive-open to precise-assertive communication styles. In conclusion, the post-hijrah communication transformation is accommodative, operating through a selective synthesis where new religious identities do not erase local cultural identity.
