Abstract

Film is not merely consumed as a medium of entertainment; it also reflects the social realities occurring around us. One social phenomenon that is frequently encountered is verbal violence. This social phenomenon is still commonly found in various spheres, such as within the family and school environments. This study aims to determine how verbal violence is depicted or represented in the film "Rumah untuk Alie" by Herwin Novianto through John Fiske's semiotic analysis. This study employs a qualitative approach. The corpus used in this study consists of 22 film scenes indicated to contain verbal violence. The concept of verbal violence used refers to the concept proposed by Infante and Wigley regarding verbal aggressiveness. The data examined were collected through documentation and literature review techniques. The data were then processed using the Miles and Huberman analysis model, which consists of data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The analysis of verbal violence representation was conducted based on three levels in John Fiske's semiotic theory: the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. The results of this study indicate that the researcher identified three forms of verbal violence in the film "Rumah untuk Alie," namely character assassination, insults, and obscene language. The depiction of verbal violence was found both implicitly and explicitly at the level of reality, which focuses on visible aspects, and at the level of representation, which focuses on the meanings behind the use of cinematographic techniques. The level of ideology delves deeper into the thinking underlying the phenomenon of verbal violence in the film "Rumah untuk Alie." Two ideologies were identified, namely patriarchy and social dominance. Both ideologies are reflected in Alie's relationship with his family and his relationship with his friends at school.
