Abstract

This study analyzed the effect of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) current variations on the mechanical properties, macrostructure, and microstructure of AISI 1020 welded joints produced with E7018 electrodes. Welding currents of 70 A, 90 A, and 110 A were applied to 10 mm and 12 mm thick plates. A 3 × 2 factorial design with three replications produced 18 specimens. Tensile testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM E8/E8M to determine Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), yield strength, effective elastic modulus, and equivalent toughness. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA at a 5% significance level. The highest UTS values were obtained at 110 A, reaching 344.13 MPa for the 10 mm specimens and 327.07 MPa for the 12 mm specimens. The highest yield strength was 324.94 MPa at 110 A–10 mm, while the highest value for the 12 mm specimens was 286.13 MPa at 90 A. The highest effective elastic modulus, 6.78 GPa, was obtained at 90 A–10 mm, whereas the highest equivalent toughness, 22.63 MJ/m³, was obtained at 90 A–12 mm. ANOVA showed that welding current significantly affected UTS and yield strength, while thickness significantly affected effective elastic modulus and equivalent toughness; the current–thickness interaction was not significant for any parameter. Macrostructural observations showed that 70 A produced less uniform fractures, 90 A produced more stable joints, and 110 A increased strength but indicated a greater thermal effect on the HAZ. Microstructural observations revealed changes in ferrite and pearlite distribution within the base metal, HAZ, and weld metal. Keywords: AISI 1020 steel, SMAW, welding current, E7018 electrode, tensile test, toughness, microstructure.
