Abstract
The production of emprit ginger (Zingiber officinale var. amarum) can be increased through improvements in cultivation technology, such as the use of natural plant growth regulators (PGRs) (e.g., red onion extract) and the selection of appropriate growing media. This study aimed to determine the effects of red onion extract concentration, type of growing medium, and the interaction between the two on the early growth of emprit ginger seedlings. The study was conducted on the grounds of the Faculty of Agriculture at UPN “Veteran” East Java from February to April 2026, using a two-factor randomized block design with three replications: red onion extract concentration (0%, 20%, 40%) and type of growing medium (soil; soil + sand; soil + sand + goat manure). The observed parameters included time to sprouting, seedling length, number of shoots, number of leaves, number of roots, and root length. The results showed that there was no significant interaction between the two factors for any of the parameters, and the concentration of red onion extract alone also had no significant effect. The type of growing medium had a significant effect only on seedling length, with the soil + sand + goat manure medium (M3) yielding the best results, while the parameters of time to sprouting, number of shoots, number of leaves, number of roots, and root length were not significantly affected by the growing medium.
