Abstract

Infidelity in marriage not only damages trust between spouses but also influences how victims manage their personal information after experiencing betrayal. This study aims to analyze the communication privacy management of infidelity victims in marital relationships using Sandra Petronio's Communication Privacy Management Theory. This research employed a qualitative descriptive. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight informants who had experienced infidelity in their marriages. The findings reveal that victims perceive infidelity as an event that transforms communication privacy boundaries, influencing their decisions to disclose or conceal personal information regarding their experiences. Victims selectively determine trusted individuals with whom they share personal information, implement various strategies to manage privacy boundaries on social media, negotiate information ownership with family members and close friends, and reconstruct their privacy and personal identity following the experience of infidelity. The study also found that communication privacy management is a dynamic process influenced by emotional conditions, levels of trust, relationships with significant others, and the perceived social consequences of disclosing personal information. This study contributes to the field of Communication Studies by demonstrating that victims of infidelity actively establish, maintain, and renegotiate communication privacy boundaries as part of their adaptation process after experiencing betrayal within marital relationships.
