Abstract
This study aims to recover manganese dioxide (MnO₂) compounds from dry cell battery waste using a hydrometallurgy method optimized with Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The background of the research is driven by the growing industrial demand for MnO₂ in Indonesia, which is still met through imports, as well as the issue of battery waste classified as B3 (hazardous and toxic materials). The hydrometallurgy process is carried out through a leaching stage using 1.2 M sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) as the solvent assisted by microwave heating for 10-50 minutes and the addition of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) as a reducing agent at 0–2% w/v of the solvent, then continued with oxidative precipitation using 0.25 M KMnO₄ to obtain pure MnO₂ precipitate. The main variables tested were the concentration of the reducing agent and the leaching time. Analysis was done using the permanganometry method to determine MnO₂ content and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) to identify the chemical composition. The results show that the purity of Mn in the final product reached 96.10–97.33%, a significant increase from the starting material, which was only 64.61%. Optimization using the RSM Central Composite Design (CCD) model in DesignExpert 13 software gave the optimum conditions at 2% w/v H2O2 addition and 39.154 minutes, resulting in 96.761 ≈ 96.8% with a desirability of 0.805. The results show a very good model fit (R² = 0.9151). Overall, the hydrometallurgy process aided by microwaves and the H₂O₂ reductant proved effective in extracting and purifying MnO₂ from dry cell waste, with results exceeding the commercial MnO₂ standard (92%). This study supports the principles of B3 waste recycling and the SDGs in e-waste management as well as reducing dependence on imported industrial raw materials.
