Abstract

Boric acid is an important industrial chemical widely used in the glass, ceramic, detergent, and pharmaceutical industries, resulting in a continuously increasing domestic demand. This pre-design project aims to design a boric acid plant with a production capacity of 35,000 tons per year using sodium tetraborate and sulfuric acid as the main raw materials. Boric acid is produced through the acidification of sodium tetraborate with sulfuric acid in a Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactor (CSTR), followed by crystallization, centrifugation, and drying processes to obtain the final product. The proposed plant will be located in the Manyarejo Industrial Area, Gresik Regency, East Java, Indonesia, due to its strategic access to raw materials, utilities, transportation facilities, and supporting infrastructure. To support plant operations, the water supply is sourced from the nearby river, while electricity is provided by both an on-site generator and the state electricity company (PLN), as well as the industrial estate's power supply. The plant is designed as a Limited Liability Company (Perseroan Terbatas/PT) with a line-and-staff organizational structure and is planned to operate continuously for 330 days per year. The economic evaluation indicates that the proposed plant is financially feasible, with an after-tax Return on Investment (ROI) of 20.98%, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 16.992%, a Payback Period (PBP) of 3 years and 1 month, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 28.17%. Based on the technical and economic evaluations, the proposed boric acid plant with a production capacity of 35,000 tons per year is considered feasible for implementation
