Abstract

A propylene production plant with a capacity of 65,000 tons/year is planned to be established in Purwakarta District, Cilegon City, Banten, Indonesia. The plant will operate continuously for 24 hours per day and 330 days per year. Propane supplied from Pertamina Patra Niaga LPG Terminal Tanjung Sekong will be used as the main feedstock, while aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) obtained from PT Satir Material Indonesia will serve as the catalyst. The produced propylene will be used as a raw material for the plastics and polymer industries. The production process employs propane dehydrogenation, in which propane is converted into propylene and hydrogen gas. The reactor effluent is first sent to a flash drum to separate hydrogen, after which the bottom product is fed to a distillation column to obtain 99.9% purity propylene as the main product while separating the by-products. The plant is designed as a limited liability company (Perseroan Terbatas) with a line-and-staff organizational structure and 117 employees. Utility requirements include 1,476.147 kg/h of steam, 3,642 kWh of electricity, 350.9834 m³/h of water, and 24.5683 kg/h of fuel, with a total plant area of 40,100 m². The economic evaluation indicates that the project is financially feasible, with a fixed capital investment (FCI) of IDR 599.72 billion, a working capital investment (WCI) of IDR 270.28 billion, a return on investment (ROI) of 23.6%, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 12%, a payback period of 4 years and 3 months, and a break-even point (BEP) of 31.57%.
