Abstract

The proposed Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) plant, utilizing isobutylene and methanol as raw materials and the Snamprogetti process, is designed with a production capacity of 55,000 tons per year. MTBE is a chemical compound widely used as a gasoline additive to boost octane ratings, improve combustion quality, and reduce vehicle exhaust emissions. Currently, the demand for MTBE in Indonesia remains high, with the majority of supply met through imports. Therefore, establishing a domestic MTBE plant is a strategic move to meet national industrial needs, reduce import dependency, and support the growth of Indonesia's petrochemical industry. The MTBE production process utilizes isobutylene (99.9% purity) and methanol (99.85% purity) as raw materials. Both feedstocks are initially held in storage tanks; the methanol is then pumped to adjust the operating pressure before being mixed with the isobutylene in a mixer (M-130). The mixed feed is subsequently pumped to reach reactor operating conditions and fed into a Multitube Fixed Bed Reactor (R-210) containing an Amberlyst-15 catalyst. The reaction proceeds at 60°C and 15 atm with 98% isobutylene conversion, yielding MTBE as the primary product. The reactor effluent is then directed to a Flash Drum (H-310) to separate light components—specifically isobutylene and butene—from the liquid mixture. Finally, the liquid product undergoes separation in Distillation Column I (D-320) to obtain MTBE with 99% purity as the main product, which is then stored in a product tank. The remaining mixture of methanol and water is subsequently processed in Distillation Column II (D-330) to separate the methanol for recycling back to the mixer, while the water—still containing trace amounts of methanol—is directed to the wastewater treatment unit. Based on technical considerations and the results of the economic analysis conducted, the establishment of an MTBE plant in the Bontang Industrial Estate, Guntung, North Bontang City, East Kalimantan, is deemed feasible.
