Abstract

The Acetonitrile Production Plant from Acetic Acid and Ammonia using the ammonolysis process is designed with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year. The plant is planned to operate continuously for 365 days per year. The production of acetonitrile requires acetic acid and ammonia as the main raw materials.The process begins by pumping acetic acid from the storage tank and heating it using a heat exchanger until it reaches 360°C and a pressure of 3.1 atm. Meanwhile, liquid ammonia is pumped, expanded, and heated to the gaseous state at 360°C and 3.1 atm. Both feed streams are then introduced into a fixed-bed multitube reactor equipped with a γ-alumina catalyst. The first reaction occurs at 360°C with a conversion of 98%, producing a gaseous mixture of acetonitrile, water, acetic acid, and ammonia.The reactor effluent is cooled to 30°C at a pressure of 1 atm, then fed into a flash drum to separate the gas and liquid phases. The liquid stream is subsequently heated to 93.9°C and introduced into the distillation column to separate the bottom product, consisting of water, acetic acid, and the by-product acetamide. The distillate from the distillation column is further purified using extractive distillation with ethylene glycol as the entrainer at 85°C. This process produces acetonitrile with a purity of 99% as the overhead product. The bottom product from the extractive distillation column consists of water and ethylene glycol, which is then sent to a second distillation column to recover reusable ethylene glycol. The bottom product of the second distillation column, containing water, is discharged to the wastewater treatment unit, while the recovered ethylene glycol is recycled to the extractive distillation process. Based on the process design, the proposed Acetonitrile Production Plant has the following specifications: -Production Capacity : 60,000 tons/year -Company Type : Limited Liability Company (Perseroan Terbatas) -Organizational Structure : Line and Staff -Plant Location : Wijaya Kusuma Industrial Estate, Semarang -Land Area : 78,078 m² -Operating Mode : Continuous -Operating Time : 365 days/year; 24 hours/day -Construction Period : 2 years -Plant Lifetime : 10 years -Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) : Rp. 4,367,360,022,050.43 -Working Capital Investment (WCI) : Rp. 1,885,359,521,237.53 -Total Capital Investment (TCI) : Rp. 6,252,719,543,287.96 -Annual Raw Material Cost : Rp. 3,522,801,670,191.97 -Annual Utility Cost : Rp. 594,203,359,372.576 -Total Production Cost (TPC) : Rp. 7,742,221,769,626.91 -Annual Sales Revenue : Rp. 10,613,971,397,971 -Bank Interest Rate : 13% -Return on Investment (Before Tax) : 34% -Return on Investment (After Tax) : 26.55% -Payback Period (PBP) : 3 years 12 months -Internal Rate of Return (IRR) : 23% -Break-Even Point (BEP) : 35%
