Abstract
Empty fruit bunch (EFB) waste is a solid by-product of palm oil processing that still has potential for further utilization due to its potassium content in the form of K₂O. This study aimed to examine the reaction kinetics of potassium phosphate formation from K₂O obtained from EFB ash using phosphoric acid as the reactant. The process began with the combustion of EFB to produce ash, followed by extraction with distilled water. The resulting ash extract solution was then reacted with phosphoric acid in a three-neck flask at temperatures of 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 °C with reaction times of 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 minutes with stirring at 200 rpm. Product formed during the reaction was analyzed using a spectrophotometric method to analyze the potassium content. Results indicated that the maximum potassium conversion was obtained at a temperature of 100 °C and a time of 70 minutes, reaching a conversion of 0.8788. Kinetic analysis indicated that the formation of potassium phosphate followed first order reaction model, and the highest reaction rate of 0.0165 min⁻¹ obtained at 100 °C. Based on calculations using the Arrhenius equation, the activation energy of the reaction was determined to be 442.421 J/mol, with frequency factor of 0.0289.
