Abstract
This study aims to examine the differences in the framing of the news coverage regarding the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by the online news media Kompas.com and Republika.co.id during the period of March 1–5, 2026. This research employs a qualitative approach using Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model, which consists of four analytical elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgement, and treatment recommendation. The findings reveal that Kompas.com frames Khamenei’s death through three independent framing categories: the Succession Frame, which presents his death as a leadership vacuum that must be filled immediately; the Military Escalation Frame, which emphasizes the chronology of the military operation and the threats of retaliation; and the Factual-Informative Frame, which reports developments in a neutral and informative manner. In contrast, Republika.co.id frames Khamenei’s death through three interrelated framing categories. The Martyrdom Frame constructs his death as a sacred sacrifice; the Resistance Frame legitimizes Iran’s retaliation as both a duty and a legitimate right; and the Solidarity Frame extends the expression of mourning from Iran to the broader global Muslim community. The differences in framing employed by Kompas.com and Republika.co.id demonstrate that the media possess the capacity to construct social reality in accordance with their respective perspectives, values, and ideological orientations.
