Abstract

A 55,000 ton per year Monochlorobenzene plant will be established in Cilegon, Banten, Indonesia. The plant will operate continuously for 24 hours a day and 330 days a year. Benzene and chlorine are used as the main raw materials, supplied by domestic chemical industries. Monochlorobenzene is widely utilized as an intermediate in the manufacture of pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, rubber chemicals, and various specialty chemicals. This plant employs the liquid-phase chlorination process using ferric chloride (FeCl₃) as the catalyst because of its high selectivity toward monochlorobenzene and its industrial applicability. Liquid benzene is first mixed with the catalyst before being fed into a chlorination reactor, where it reacts with chlorine gas at controlled operating conditions to produce monochlorobenzene and hydrogen chloride through an exothermic reaction. The reactor effluent is subsequently neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution to remove acidic impurities, producing sodium chloride and water as by-products. The neutralized mixture is then separated to remove the aqueous phase before entering a series of distillation columns. Excess benzene is recovered and recycled to the reactor, while monochlorobenzene is separated from heavier chlorinated compounds to obtain the required product purity. The final monochlorobenzene product is cooled and stored in storage tanks prior to distribution, whereas by-products and unreacted materials are processed or recycled to improve overall process efficiency and minimize waste generation.
