Abstract
The circulation of covert pornographic advertisements on Platform X demonstrates the misuse of digital public spaces for commercial purposes through the hijacking of viral topics, the use of censored images of women’s bodies, and the insertion of affiliate links for adult products. This practice not only conceals its economic motives but also exploits women’s bodies as its primary means of attracting attention. This study aims to describe how active users of Platform X interpret covert pornographic advertisements, using gender as an analytical framework. This study employs Berger and Luckmann’s Social Construction Theory, van Zoonen’s Media Consumption Theory, and Sandra Harding’s Standpoint Theory. It adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Informants were selected through purposive sampling based on a screening questionnaire and consisted of eight active Platform X users: four men and four women aged 18–35 who had been exposed to covert pornographic advertisements. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, digital documentation, and a literature review. The findings indicate that covert pornographic advertisements generally appear passively within viral news, informational utass, popular hashtags, and reply sections. Users identify their commercial motives through contextual inconsistencies, provocative language, censored visuals, and the presence of affiliate links. Male informants tend to interpret the content from ethical, rational, and functional perspectives, viewing it as both an informational disturbance and an exploitation of women’s bodies. Female informants, meanwhile, interpret it more personally because it is associated with feelings of insecurity, concerns about image misuse, and the objectification of women’s bodies. User responses include ignoring or clicking the content, using filtering features, blocking accounts, and reporting them. These experiences ultimately culminate in a shift in the meaning of Platform X in the eyes of its users, from a space of information exchange into a space that demands constant vigilance, with gender shaping the depth of meaning-making although it is not the sole factor determining users' actions.
