Abstract
This study focuses on the interior redesign of Kertajaya Bus Terminal in MJKR by adopting a local cultural approach to improve the quality of the terminal's public spaces. Kertajaya Terminal is regarded not merely as an intercity transportation facility but also as a public space with significant social functions and the potential to represent the cultural identity of MJKR. The existing condition of the terminal reveals several issues, including inadequate waiting area comfort, inefficient circulation patterns, and a lack of visual elements and spatial experiences reflecting the region's local culture. Therefore, this study positions the terminal as an integrated spatial system that requires redesign to address users' functional needs while strengthening its local image and identity. The design process employed the Design Thinking method combined with a MJKR local cultural approach. This method emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of users' needs and experiences through the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Data were collected through field observations, interviews, literature reviews, visual documentation, and physical measurements to understand user activity patterns, circulation systems, comfort levels, and the potential integration of local cultural values, including the Majapahit heritage, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), hospitality, and the simplicity of the MJKR community. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative, descriptive quantitative, and spatial analysis approaches and were subsequently validated through data triangulation to ensure the consistency and credibility of the findings. The findings served as the foundation for developing the design criteria and interior design concept for Kertajaya Bus Terminal, integrating functionality, user comfort, and local cultural identity. The proposed design focuses on improving spatial organization and circulation, enhancing terminal facilities and waiting area comfort, and incorporating local cultural elements contextually through the application of spatial organization, materials, colors, and interior visual elements. The resulting design proposal is expected to transform Kertajaya Terminal into a more human-centered, comfortable, and efficient transportation hub while serving as a cultural gateway that represents the character and identity of MJKR City.
