Abstract
The suicide of a student in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) attracts public attention because it concerns child suicide and the fulfillment of children’s right to education. The incident generated extensive media coverage, with different news outlets presenting varying perspectives. Differences in editorial orientation allow the media to construct different realities of the same event, thereby influencing public understanding. This study aimed to examine the framing of news coverage of the student suicide case in NTT published by the online news portals Detik.com and Tempo.co. A qualitative approach was employed using Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model, which consists of four dimensions: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgment, and treatment recommendation. The research object consisted of 19 news articles, including 10 articles from Detik.com and 9 from Tempo.co, published between January 30 and February 28, 2026. The findings were interpreted using Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s Social Construction of Reality Theory and Jean Piaget’s Schema Theory. The results showed that Detik.com framed the incident as the result of multiple systems that had not functioned optimally, positioning the government as an actor actively responding to and addressing the situation. In contrast, Tempo.co framed the incident as evidence of the state’s structural failure to fulfill the basic rights of impoverished communities, emphasizing the need for fundamental changes in bureaucracy, aid distribution, free basic education, and budgetary priorities. The differences in framing were influenced by editorial orientation, media schemas, and the process of social construction of reality. This study confirmed that media coverage did not merely represent facts but also constructed meanings and social realities that shaped public understanding of the event.
