Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of applying the concept of sustainable tourism rooted in local wisdom to the development of community-based tourism destinations. Tomboan Ngawonggo in Ngawonggo Village, Tajinan District, Malang Regency, possesses natural, cultural, and historical tourism potential managed by the local community; however, the implementation of sustainable tourism principles still requires strengthening across various aspects. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the sustainable tourism concept based on local wisdom at Tomboan Ngawonggo, using the four pillars of sustainable tourism: sustainable management, socio-economic sustainability, cultural sustainability, and environmental sustainability. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving managers, the community, and relevant stakeholders selected via purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the implementation of the sustainable tourism concept at Tomboan Ngawonggo has been carried out quite well, particularly regarding community participation, the preservation of local wisdom values, the culture, and efforts to maintain environmental sustainability. Destination management has actively involved the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) and the community in decision-making processes. Furthermore, the presence of the Ngawonggo (ancient bathing pool) site serves as a cultural attraction that reinforces the destination's identity. Nevertheless, several challenges remain, including the absence of standard operating procedures (SOPs), monitoring and evaluation systems, documented financial management, structured environmental conservation programs, systematic waste management, and optimal digital marketing strategies.
