Abstract
Aurelie Moeremans’s memoir "Broken Strings," which discloses her experience of child grooming, went viral and sparked extensive discourse on TikTok, transforming a personal narrative into a digital public sphere where audiences collectively reconstruct the meaning of child grooming. This phenomenon is worth examining because TikTok functions not merely as a channel for disseminating information, but as a space of meaning production and negotiation that actively involves its audience, especially when it comes to sensitive issues such as child grooming which is not yet widely discussed, especially in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze TikTok audience reception of the grooming narrative in the memoir as a representation of the digital public sphere, while also mapping audiences’ decoding positions toward the message constructed by the author. Using a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding theory, this research triangulates data from the memoir, TikTok audience comments, and in-depth interviews with five informants actively engaged in the “Broken Strings” discourse on TikTok. The findings show that the grooming narrative unfolds through the stages of rapport building, emotional dependency, isolation and controlling behavior, manipulation-gaslighting-guilt tripping, and sexual grooming and sexual coercion, culminating in unequal power relations and sexual violence. Most audiences and informants occupy a dominant-hegemonic position, fully accepting the message that the depicted relationship constitutes grooming rather than a normal romance. A smaller portion of audiences take a negotiated position by adding personal interpretations, while a minority hold an oppositional position that downplays the issue. These findings affirm that TikTok functions as a digital public sphere that facilitates the collective production and negotiation of meaning, as well as a means of public education on the dangers of child grooming. This study also demonstrates the relevance of Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding theory in understanding the diversity of audience reception toward traumatic narratives in contemporary digital spaces, and opens opportunities for further research to deepen the study of audience reception on other sensitive social issues through social media platforms.
