Abstract

The documentary film Dirty Vote by Dandhy Dwi Laksono is a critical media work that highlights alleged abuse of power and fraud leading up to the General Election. This study aims to investigate how power discourse is constructed within the film and to reveal the various forms of power issues presented. The research employs a qualitative method with Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, encompassing three dimensions: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. Data were collected through observations of verbal narratives, visual elements, graphic data, and explanations provided by three constitutional law experts featured in the film. The findings indicate that in the textual dimension, power discourse is constructed through firm legal terminology, critical rhetoric, and the integration of graphics and visual data to clarify the existence of election fraud. In the discursive practice dimension, the film was independently produced and publicly distributed via digital platforms to facilitate widespread access and public discussion. Meanwhile, the social practice dimension reveals several power issues, including the politicization of regulations, the misuse of Social Assistance (Bansos), the lack of neutrality among public officials, and the exploitation of legal loopholes to establish political dynasties. Ultimately, the film demonstrates how instruments of power are structurally manipulated to maintain the political interests of specific groups.
