Abstract
Social media content has become a space for representing and negotiating the meaning of gender roles in everyday life. One example is the cooking content on the TikTok account @victoragustino97, which features a man cooking for his wife and has generated various audience responses. This study aims to examine women's reception of the cooking content on the TikTok account @victoragustino97. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Stuart Hall's reception analysis method through the concepts of encoding and decoding. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight female informants from diverse backgrounds in terms of age, education, occupation, and family experiences. The findings indicate that the informants' reception of the representation of men engaging in cooking activities was not uniform but was influenced by their life experiences, family upbringing, social environment, and internalized values. Based on Stuart Hall's reception theory, the study identified two decoding positions: the dominant-hegemonic position and the negotiated position. Informants in the dominant position fully accepted the message that cooking can be performed by both men and women without being restricted by traditional gender role divisions. Meanwhile, informants in the negotiated position accepted men's involvement in domestic activities while still interpreting it in accordance with their religious beliefs, cultural values, and personal experiences. No informants were found to occupy the oppositional position. The findings also reveal that the factors influencing audience reception were not age or generational differences, but rather family experiences and the social environment.
