Abstract

This research is based by the phenomenon of high rates of Domestic Violence (KDRT) in Indonesia. A deeply entrenched patriarchal culture often causes such violence to be dismissed as a commonplace domestic issue and normalized within society. This phenomenon is represented through a child's perspective in the film Andai Ibu Tidak Menikah dengan Ayah. This study aims to examine the discourse of violence within patriarchal families as contained in the film Andai Ibu Tidak Menikah dengan Ayah. The method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach with a critical paradigm, using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model, which dissects three dimension text, social cognition, and social context. Data collection techniques were conducted through non-participant observation of scenes and dialogues, as well as in-depth interviews with the director, Kuntz Agus, regarding the creative process and the filmmaker's ideological perspectives. The results demonstrate that the discourse of violence within the patriarchal family in the film is constructed not as visible physical violence, but rather as symbolic violence and family neglect. Consequently, the film functions as a cultural text that not only entertains but also reveals that domestic abuse does not always manifest physically instead, it can operate subtly through language manipulation and passive neglect perpetuated by patriarchal structures.
