Abstract

Film is a discursive text that shapes public perceptions of identity, culture, and gender relations through its narratives and visual representations. Jeremias Nyangoen's Women From Rote Island portrays the lives of women in East Nusa Tenggara within the patriarchal culture of Rote society. This study aims to analyze how East Nusa Tenggara women are represented through subject and object positions, as well as to reveal the discourse underlying the representation of Eastern Indonesian women from Sara Mills' perspective. The film was selected because it presents a portrayal of Eastern Indonesian women that differs from the stereotypical representations commonly found in Indonesian cinema. This study employs a qualitative approach with a critical paradigm using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis. The analysis focuses on subject and object positions to examine how power relations shape the representation of women in the film. The findings reveal that Women From Rote Island represents Eastern Indonesian women not only as objects experiencing subordination, violence, and injustice within patriarchal structures, but also as subjects who possess agency, resist oppression, and preserve their cultural identity. The study also finds that the film constructs a discourse that critiques power relations embedded in customary practices, social norms, and patriarchal culture, while presenting Eastern Indonesian women as individuals with voices, lived experiences, and complex identities.
