Abstract

This study presents the synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite from mud crab (Scylla serrata) shell waste using the precipitation method. The novelty of this work lies in the utilization of organic crab shell waste combined with variable optimization using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to achieve a Ca/P ratio that meets quality standards. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimal conditions are achieved at a calcination temperature of 900C and a disodium hydrogen phosphate concentration of 2.95 M, yielding a Ca/P ratio of 1.6712, which complies with the ISO 13779-3:2008 standard. Furthermore, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the formation of crystalline hydroxyapatite as the primary phase, while Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) testing reveals an irregular and porous morphology in accordance with the ISO 13779-6 standard. Overall, This study provides insight into the valorization of crab shell waste as a viable raw material for biomedical biomaterial applications.
