Abstract

The phenomenon of fatherlessness has become an increasingly significant social issue in Indonesia because it refers not only to the physical absence of a father but also to the lack of emotional involvement in a child's life. The film Andai Ibu Tidak Menikah dengan Ayah represents this issue through the complex dynamics of family relationships. This study aimed to analyze Generation Z's reception of the representation of fatherlessness in the film. This research employed a qualitative approach using Stuart Hall's Encoding-Decoding Reception Analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 13 Generation Z informants aged 20–25 years who had watched Andai Ibu Tidak Menikah dengan Ayah. The findings showed that most informants interpreted fatherlessness as the emotional absence of a father, characterized by a lack of attention, communication, emotional support, and responsibility in fulfilling paternal roles. The informants also perceived that this condition was influenced by family conflict, divorce, financial problems, poor family communication, and fathers' failure to carry out their responsibilities. Based on Stuart Hall's reception analysis, the informants' interpretations were classified into three reading positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. Most participants occupied the dominant-hegemonic position because they accepted the film's representation of fatherlessness as a reflection of social reality. This study concluded that individual experiences and personal backgrounds influenced how Generation Z interpreted the representation of fatherlessness in film. Keywords: reception analysis, Generation Z, fatherlessness, film, Stuart Hall.
