Abstract

This final project discusses the interior redesign of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Surabaya using a biophilic design approach as an effort to improve the quality of the worship space to be more sacred, comfortable, and restorative. The design background is based on the high activity of the church serving around 10,000 people, which has given rise to various problems, such as dense circulation, less than optimal quiet atmosphere for worship, the unavailability of a room for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and a Confession room that does not meet the aspects of privacy and comfort. Therefore, a design solution is needed that not only improves the function of the space, but also supports the spiritual experience of the congregation through a more calming environment. The design method uses an approachDesign Thinkingwhich consists of stagesempathize, define, ideate, prototype, And test. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews with priests, church administrators, and congregation members, as well as literature and precedent studies. All data were analyzed qualitatively to identify user needs and formulate a design concept that integrates biophilic principles, such as the utilization of natural lighting, the use of natural materials, vegetation, organic forms, and spatial arrangements that support comfort, tranquility, and solemnity in worship. The design results in a modern interior concept with an organic theme that prioritizes balance between function, aesthetics, and spiritual values. The redesign includes rearranging the layout, providing a Blessed Sacrament Adoration room, improving the quality of the Confession room, optimizing lighting, selecting natural materials, and using ergonomic furniture that aligns with Catholic liturgical symbolism. This design is expected to create a more restorative worship environment, improve the comfort and quality of the congregation's spiritual experience, and serve as a reference for the development of interior design for places of worship with a biophilic approach.
