Abstract

The growth of the tabletop gaming community in Surabaya, encompassing board games, card games, miniature wargames, and role-playing games (RPGs), has continued to increase alongside the expansion of the hobby industry and the creative economy. However, this growth has not been accompanied by the availability of facilities capable of accommodating the integrated needs for gaming, learning, competition, creative activities, and social interaction. Community activities remain dispersed across cafés and commercial venues that are not specifically designed to support the technical requirements of tabletop gaming, thereby limiting community development and collaboration among users. In response to this issue, the Warhammer 40K Base: Tabletop Community Center is proposed as a thematic community hub in Surabaya that integrates recreational, educational, social, and commercial functions within a single complex. The design process is based on literature reviews, precedent studies, analyses of user activities, spatial requirements, site conditions, and technical building considerations to establish the design concept. The project adopts a Concept-Based Framework approach with the theme Ludic Stratified Voyage, which translates the player's journey from beginner to professional community member into spatial hierarchy, mass organization, and spatial experience. The building's visual identity draws inspiration from the metaphor of a Warhammer 40K space warship through its mass composition, proportions, and neo-Gothic futuristic architectural language without literally replicating its form, thereby preserving functionality and user comfort. The spatial program includes casual gaming areas, tournament arenas, private RPG rooms, miniature assembly and painting workshops, galleries, a thematic café, retail stores, and supporting community facilities designed to be flexible and interconnected. The resulting design creates a community center that not only serves as a dedicated venue for tabletop gaming activities but also provides an immersive spatial experience, strengthens community identity, supports the growth of the creative industry, and has the potential to become a new hobby destination landmark in the City of Surabaya.
