Abstract

The interior design of Indonesian Cancer Foundation (YKI) Jawa Timur Shelter was conceived in response to the significant year-over-year increase in cancer cases, which has created a need for adequate non-medical support facilities. Currently, the shelter’s environment is deemed ineffective in providing physical and emotional support to cancer survivors, thus necessitating an interior transformation. The design method employed is Design Thinking, which includes the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. This method is supported by qualitative research using a case study approach, comprising field observations, document analysis, and literature review. This approach was chosen to understand the specific needs of cancer survivors, the characteristics of the design object, and the principles of the Healing Environment as the basis for formulating the design concept. The design focus lies on implementing the principles of the Healing Environment (such as Connection to Nature, Healthy Lighting, and Accessible Environment) through spatial layout, circulation, and the selection of safe materials. The final result of this interior design is expected to optimize the function of the YKI Jawa Timur Shelter as an educational, supportive, and adaptive facility that actively contributes to the healing process and provides positive support to cancer survivors.
