Abstract

This study aims to understand how self-identity is constructed through the process of conflict management in romantic relationships among young adults from broken homes in Surabaya. This study employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews with nine informants aged 19–25 who are currently in or have previously been in romantic relationships and come from broken homes. The results indicate that conflict experiences from the family of origin leave a significant imprint on how individuals respond to and interpret conflict in romantic relationships, although these perspectives may shift as experience accumulates. The conflict management patterns identified are diverse, including contending, yielding, problem-solving, and a combination of withdrawing and problem-solving, with each pattern influenced by the individual’s background and emotional state. Through this process, self-identity is constructed through the concepts of the basic self, the other self, and the ideal self, indicating that romantic relationships serve as a space for individuals with a broken home background to rebuild their selfidentity in a more mature manner.
