Abstract
This study aims to identify the characteristics and marketing channels of shallot traders in Jatirogo Sub-district, Tuban Regency; to analyse the magnitude of marketing margins and the farmers’ share in each marketing channel; and to analyse the factors influencing the pricing of shallots at the retail level. Red onion farming in this region plays a strategic role; however, farmers often face challenges in the form of unpredictable price fluctuations and weak bargaining power due to their dependence on middlemen. The research method employed was a quantitative approach using purposive sampling in Jatirogo Sub-district. Data were collected via questionnaires from respondents comprising farmers and traders at various levels (collectors, retailers, distributors). Data analysis techniques included descriptive analysis of characteristics and marketing channels, analysis of marketing margins and the farmer’s share, and SEM-PLS analysis to identify factors influencing price setting at the retail level. The variables analysed include transport costs, packaging costs, the supply-demand gap, production volume, and the price of substitute goods. The research findings are expected to provide a comprehensive overview of the red onion supply chain structure in Jatirogo Sub-district and to identify marketing efficiency across each channel. Furthermore, this study aims to determine the dominant factors shaping the final price at the consumer level, thereby serving as a basis for local government and market actors in formulating fairer and more sustainable price stability strategies for producer farmers.
