Abstract
The development of information technology has transformed the role of public libraries into adaptive public spaces that support both conventional and digital literacy. Sidoarjo Regency has experienced a significant increase in reading interest; however, this growth has not been fully supported by the equitable quality of library facilities and spaces capable of accommodating literacy, educational, and social interaction activities dynamically. Therefore, a public library design is needed that can adapt to the diverse and continuously evolving needs of its users. The design of the Public Library in Sidoarjo aims to provide a flexible, comfortable, and responsive literacy facility and media hub that addresses the demands of the digital era. A spatial flexibility approach is implemented through the principles of adaptability, universality, movability, transformability, and responsiveness, enabling spaces to accommodate changing user needs without requiring permanent physical alterations. The design employs the intangible metaphor method, which translates the values of spatial flexibility into the building’s spatial organization, form, and atmosphere. The proposed design is expected to create an inclusive, comfortable, and sustainable public library that serves as a center for literacy and community interaction in Sidoarjo.
