Abstract
The design of a wellness resort in Malang using a healing environment approach was proposed as an integrated response to the rise in mental health cases in East Java and the growing need for accommodation in the regional tourism sector. Mental health service data in East Java shows an upward trend in patient visits, indicating a need for alternative treatment and recovery spaces beyond clinical settings. In parallel, East Java is listed as a major destination for domestic tourists, thus offering a potential market for mental health and wellness-based tourism products that are economical and strategic for Malang's destination development and could contribute to reducing mental health rates in East Java. The design concept for the wellness resort in Malang uses a healing environment approach, conveying a connection with nature (local landscaping and vegetation), acoustic control and natural lighting, environmentally friendly local materials, and sensory enhancements, as well as therapeutic programs within the resort facilities to support psychological recovery. The design method used in this wellness resort is a Force-Based Framework with the theme "Healing with Nature." The theme and methods are aligned with the healing environment approach to ensure a contextual and culturally appropriate fit between the space and its surroundings, thus optimizing user recovery and enhancing the natural balance between user needs and the surrounding environment. The concept of indoor and outdoor spaces is always connected to nature and the site context to maintain comfort and security for users with the surrounding resort environment. This design makes accommodation as a safe, private, and easily accessible therapeutic facility for domestic tourists, thus adding value to the destination. Expected outcomes include increasing the capacity of non-medical recovery services in Malang, increasing tourism in East Java, especially Malang Regency, and contributing to promotive and preventative efforts for community mental health. The final recommendation emphasizes cross-sector collaboration such as health, tourism, and local communities for the implementation of a sustainable and socially responsive resort model.
