Abstract
A Methanol plant utilizing natural gas and oxygen via the Haldor Topsøe process is designed with a production capacity of 70,000 Tons/Year. The plant is to be established in Kasiman District, Bojonegoro Regency, East Java Province, operating continuously for 24 hours a day and 330 days a year. The primary raw material, natural gas, is sourced from PT. Pertamina EP Cepu, while the supporting raw material, oxygen, is supplied by PT. Samator Indo Gas. Methanol serves as a vital raw material or auxiliary agent across various sectors, including the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, and holds significant potential as a future alternative fuel. Furthermore, it plays a crucial role in biodiesel production and acts as a solvent in numerous industrial processes. The production of methanol using the Haldor Topsøe method begins with the reforming of natural gas to produce synthesis gas (syngas), which consists of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. This syngas is subsequently reacted in a fixed-bed reactor with a conversion rate of 99%, yielding a gaseous methanol-water mixture. This product stream is then condensed and separated from the unreacted gases in a flash drum. Finally, the methanol-water mixture is purified via a distillation column to achieve a final product purity of 99%.
