Abstract

Methanol (CH3OH) is a critical chemical commodity with extensive applications as a raw material in the formaldehydes, plastics, and pharmaceutical industries, as well as an alternative clean-burning biofuel. This plant design evaluates the technical and economic feasibility of establishing a Methanol Production Plant utilizing natural gas and oxygen (O2) via the Haldor Topsoe process. The plant is designed with a production capacity of 70,000 tons/year and is planned to operate continuously for 330 days a year. The core manufacturing route comprises three primary stages: synthesis gas (syngas) preparation through autothermal reforming (ATR) at elevated temperatures, syngas compression and catalytic methanol synthesis in a boiling water reactor (BWR), followed by crude methanol purification via a multi-column distillation system to achieve high-purity industrial grade product. Detailed material and energy balances were established to verify process efficiency and heat recovery integration. Economic evaluation and sensitivity analysis demonstrate that the plant design is profitable and sustainable, presenting a strategic opportunity to optimize domestic natural gas utilization and strengthen the national chemical supply chain.
