Abstract

This study examined audience reception toward the digital privacy of a child with a medical condition in the TikTok content of @donnamrtunslehah_. The content created different meanings among audiences, especially regarding the boundary between documentation, education, and excessive exposure of the child in digital space. This research aimed to identify how audiences interpreted the content and how their reception positions were classified based on Stuart Hall’s reception theory. This study used a qualitative approach with reception analysis. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight informants from different backgrounds, including parents of children with medical conditions, caregivers, and a foundation leader. The findings showed that audience reception was divided into three positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and opposition. Informants in the dominant-hegemonic position interpreted the content as a form of documentation, education, and parental struggle. Informants in the negotiated position accepted the main message of the content, but still considered that the child’s exposure should be limited to protect privacy. Meanwhile, informants in the opposition position viewed the public display of the child as potentially exposing the child and violating digital privacy rights. This study showed that audience reception was influenced by the informants’ experiences, knowledge, and concern for child protection. In addition, the findings indicated that the practice of displaying a child with a medical condition should be viewed critically within the framework of digital ethics and child protection.
