Abstract
This study aims to understand children's meaning-making of patriarchal parenting within Batak Toba families. Batak Toba culture, which is based on a patrilineal system, positions fathers as central figures in the family, resulting in communication patterns that tend to be hierarchical and emphasize obedience. This study employed an interpretative qualitative approach using thematic analysis developed by Braun and Clarke. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with informants from Batak Toba families who had experienced living away from their hometowns. The findings show that patriarchal parenting is manifested through the father’s dominant communication in the form of rules, reprimands, consequences, advice, and the use of cultural symbols in family interactions. These communication practices also demonstrate differences in the treatment of sons and daughters according to gender constructions within Batak Toba culture. Initially, the father's communication was interpreted as pressure and restriction; however, through reflection and changing life contexts, these experiences were later reinterpreted as forms of learning related to discipline, responsibility, self-control, and maintaining family honor. This meaning-making process is influenced by Batak Toba cultural values such as hagabeon, hamoraon, hasangapon, and the principle of anakhon hi do hamoraon di au. Thus, the meaning of patriarchal parenting is formed through communication experiences, reflection, and cultural values embedded within Batak Toba families.
