Abstract
Instagram has become a key platform for fan communities to interact and shape digital culture in the new media era. This study aims to understand the dynamics of EXO-L’s digital fan culture in Indonesia, specifically through the Instagram fanbase account @adorable.exoo. This study examines how the fandom maintains its identity and loyalty through online activities, responses, and massage production. The focus of the study is to explore fan interactions during EXO’s hiatus. This study draws on Lucy Benneth theory (2014), which explains the four domains of fandom: communication, creativity, knowledge, and organization and civic power. Through this theory. this study attempts to uncover how EXO’s fan culture on Instagram is manifested in the @adorable.exoo fanbase. This study uses a qualitative methodology and a virtual ethnography approach to study the culture formed in the virtual world. Data were collected through documentation of digital activities, observation of activity on the @adorable.exoo fanbase account, and in-depth interviews with six informants. This study found that the group’s hiatus did not halt fan culture activities; instead, the community remained strong, focusing on the personal activities of EXO members and regularly sharing updates. The @adorable.exoo fanbase maintains fans’ emotional engagement by facilitating communication and information exchange. Furthermore, it has been found that EXO-L fan culture has evolved into a tangible social movement, such as humanitarian actions and advocacy on social issues in Indonesia. This has successfully transformed the negative stigma of fandom into a more mature and beneficial community. Research shows that the power of digital collectives can sustain idols’ existence and make positive social contributions.
