Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of economic growth, education level, labor force participation rate, and minimum wage on the open unemployment rate in Malang City during the period 2008–2024. The open unemployment rate is an important indicator in measuring the success of regional economic development; therefore, it is necessary to examine the factors influencing it. The independent variables in this study consist of economic growth, education level measured by the average years of schooling, labor force participation rate, and minimum wage, while the dependent variable is the open unemployment rate. This research employs a quantitative approach using multiple linear regression analysis. The data used are secondary data for the period 2008–2024 obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and related institutions. Hypothesis testing is conducted using the t-test (partial test), F-test (simultaneous test), and coefficient of determination (R²) to determine the ability of the independent variables to explain the dependent variable. The results show that partially, economic growth and minimum wage have a negative and significant effect on the open unemployment rate in Malang City. Meanwhile, education level and labor force participation rate do not have a significant effect on the open unemployment rate. Simultaneously, all independent variables affect the open unemployment rate. These findings indicate that increasing economic growth and implementing appropriate minimum wage policies can serve as effective instruments in reducing the open unemployment rate in Malang City.
