Abstract
The batik industry generates wastewater containing hexavalent chromium Cr(VI), a heavy metal that is toxic, carcinogenic, and hazardous to aquatic environments. One environmentally friendly and potentially effective method to reduce Cr(VI) concentration is photocatalysis using semiconductor materials. This study aims to analyze the effect of ZnO–activated carbon composite, light source variation, and catalyst mass on the photocatalytic performance in reducing Cr(VI) levels in batik wastewater. The research was conducted experimentally at the laboratory scale using a continuous-flow acrylic reactor. The variables included ZnO–activated carbon composite masses of 30 g, 45 g, and 60 g; light sources of UV-C and visible light (LED); and sampling times of 0, 50, and 100 minutes. The results showed that the ZnO–activated carbon composite significantly improved Cr(VI) removal efficiency compared to unmodified ZnO. Increasing catalyst mass and contact time tended to enhance the percentage removal of Cr(VI). In addition, the type of light source had a significant effect on photocatalytic performance, with UV light producing higher Cr(VI) removal than visible light. The optimal condition was achieved using the ZnO–activated carbon composite at the highest catalyst mass and the longest contact time, resulting in a maximum removal efficiency of 47%. These findings indicate that the ZnO–activated carbon composite has strong potential as an effective and sustainable alternative technology for batik wastewater treatment.
