Abstract
In Indonesia, food waste is the main component of organic waste and has the potential to cause a negative impact on the environment through greenhouse gas emissions, especially methane gas. This study aims to explore the utilization of food waste as a biogas raw material and analyze how the variation in the composition of food waste and cow dung affects the production of methane gas (CH4). This study also assesses the possibility of converting biogas into electrical energy through the application of Thermoelectric Generator (TEG). The research was conducted on a laboratory scale using a batch type anaerobic digester with a capacity of 15 L with a variation in the ratio of food waste and cow manure of 50:50 and 74:26. The analyzed parameters include C/N ratio, pH, temperature, methane gas percentage, biogas volume, and electric power generated from the heat energy conversion process of biogas combustion using TEG type SP1848. The research results show that the variation in substrate composition affects the stability of pH and fermentation temperature as well as the content of methane gas produced, where certain compositions produce a higher percentage of CH4 and have the potential to obtain greater electrical energy. Although the efficiency of energy conversion using Thermoelectric Generator is relatively low, this study proves that food waste has the potential as a renewable energy source that can support sustainable waste management and the fulfillment of environmentally friendly energy needs. Keywords: food waste, biogas, methane gas, anaerobic digestion, thermoelectric generator
