Abstract
This study aims to analyze how the audience interprets the representation of juvenile delinquency in the Culture Shock series on Netflix. The series depicts the dynamics of teenage life through the characters of Riko and Sabrina, which represent social class differences, social pressure, value conflicts between traditional and modern, and sex education issues. This research uses a qualitative approach with Stuart Hall's reception analysis method, which divides the audience's meaning into three positions: dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews with six informants from different social and cultural backgrounds. The results showed that two informants occupied the dominant position, fully accepting the message and content of the series; two informants were in the negotiated position, partially agreeing but modifying the meaning based on personal values; and the other two informants were in the oppositional position, rejecting most of the content because it contradicted cultural and religious norms. The factors that influence the audience's position of meaning refer to the perspectives of Melvin De Fleur & Sandra Ball-Rokeach, namely the perspectives of individual differences, social categories, and social relations. This study concludes that the audience is not a passive recipient, but an active agent in shaping the meaning of media according to their value background and experience. These results are expected to be a reference for educators, policy makers, and content producers in developing a more contextual and educative media communication strategy.
