Abstract
Film plays an important role in shaping and reproducing social constructions of masculinity through the representation of characters and social relations. In many films, masculinity is often portrayed in a singular way through values of dominance, control, and emotional restraint. In contrast, A Way Long To Come Home presented diverse ways men understood themselves and their relationships. This study aimed to analyze how the film constructed and negotiated meanings of masculinity through the characters Jem, Angkasa, and Kit. This research employed a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis to examine denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in 27 selected scenes, focusing on male characters’ behavior, interpersonal relations, and spatial settings. The findings showed that the film represented multiple masculinity myths, including the myth of control, the myth of independence and responsibility, the myth of emotion and vulnerability in modern masculinity, and the myth of masculinity that emphasized egalitarian relationships. Each male character embodied different forms of masculinity and negotiated between traditional and alternative masculine values. This study concluded that Jalan yang Jauh Jangan Lupa Pulang portrayed masculinity as a dynamic and non-singular social construction that was continuously negotiated through emotional experiences and social relations. Keywords : Masculinity, Representation, Film, Semiotics
