Abstract
The growth of tourism and the increasing economic mobility in Surabaya have created a need for a more integrated, representative souvenir center that can also strengthen the city's identity. Although Surabaya boasts a diverse range of local products, including food, beverages, crafts, clothing, and souvenirs, the current distribution of souvenir centers is scattered and lacks cohesion, making the tourist experience inefficient and visually unappealing. This study proposes the design of a Surabaya City Souvenir Center using a contemporary architectural approach as a solution to create a unified space for shopping and culinary experiences. Contemporary architecture is chosen for its ability to provide flexible forms, modern expression, and dynamic, inclusive spaces. The theme "Contemporary Locality" is used to integrate local values through tangible metaphors, adapting the shark and crocodile icons into the building’s massing, façade, and roof shapes. The design also considers climate, solar orientation, wind direction, natural lighting, and visitor comfort through the use of winding voids and efficient spatial zoning. The resulting concept is a functional building responsive to user needs, with a strong visual character that enhances Surabaya’s branding as a creative, historical, and culinary city.
