Abstract
The development of tourism in Balikpapan City provides many benefits, especially in boosting the economy and introducing local culture to visitors. Because the city’s tourism score is relatively low, developing the tourism sector through resort construction is considered the right choice. The resort is expected not only to serve as an attractive accommodation option but also as a medium for promoting local culture, particularly Bugis culture, which is rich in traditional values. This is further supported by the fact that Balikpapan is a transit city with beautiful coastal views, making resort development a suitable initiative. The design adopts a vernacular architectural approach by incorporating Bugis cultural characteristics, such as ornaments, roof forms, and spatial layouts that reflect the typology of traditional Bugis houses. This approach is relevant because the surrounding buildings still strongly reflect Bugis vernacular traditions. A contextual method is also used to ensure that the building harmonizes with its local environment. This method involves identifying the typologies around the site to produce a design that aligns with the cultural context of the Bugis community. As a result, the resort is not only a place to stay but also offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience and appreciate local culture. The outdoor spaces of the resort follow the natural contours of the land and include pedestrian pathways that support linear circulation. The grouping of buildings reflects the traditional Bugis way of living in clusters. In addition, the resort is equipped with facilities comparable to those of a 4 star hotel to support various visitor activities. Through this design, it is hoped that Balikpapan's tourism sector can grow more rapidly, preserve Bugis cultural sustainability, and increase the city’s appeal to tourists. Ultimately, the resort is expected to encourage the community to preserve Bugis vernacular culture and contribute positively to local welfare.
