Abstract

Steelmaking processes generate substantial amounts of slag waste containing silica, which can be extracted and converted into high-value products. In this study, silica (SiO₂) was extracted from steel slag using an alkaline extraction method with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), followed by acid precipitation. The experimental parameters included NaOH concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 M, as well as extraction temperatures of 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 °C. Each extraction process was conducted for 60 minutes with continuous stirring at 300 rpm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed broad peaks at 2θ around 20–30°, indicating the formation of amorphous silica. The results showed a positive correlation between both NaOH concentration and extraction temperature with silica yield; higher concentrations and temperatures resulted in greater extraction efficiency. Optimal conditions were achieved at 100 °C and 2.5 M NaOH, producing silica with a purity of 91.10%. These findings highlight the potential of steel slag as a low-cost raw material for producing amorphous silica, offering a sustainable approach to waste valorization while providing high-quality silica suitable for industrial applications, adsorbent materials, and nanotechnology.
